Matthias Werl

Masters Student

Originally from Graz, Austria, Matthias is now studying physics at the Technical University in Vienna. In 2017 he visited the W7-X Stellarator in Germany, where he interfaced a field-line tracer with the commercial FEM software Abaqus and subsequently calculated the heat load on pop-up divertor Langmuir probes. Earlier in 2018 he visited the ASDEX-Upgrade Tokamak, also in Germany, to correlate scrape-off layer (SOL) currents with energy losses from edge-localized modes (ELMs). He then joined the team in April 2018 to work on his masters thesis. He is interpreting the synergies observed between microwave start-up and electron-gun start-up in the CNT stellarator.
